The Cologne New Philharmonic and Volker Hartung invite you on a journey back in time to the 'Golden Twenties' and their ingenious swing music from Broadway to Berlin.
They immersed themselves in the playing style and sound aesthetics of the time and play in a unique playing style the best hits of the swing era from the original arrangements.
Some songs are so deeply rooted in the attitude to life of a region that one can rightly call them "Hits. " For New York and the American attitude to life, Broadway and its films, its shows, and theaters were and are a synonym of national cultural identity. Names of composers such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, and their melodies were omnipresent in New York, just as the film in Babelsberg in Berlin developed a unique cultural flowering. Talented film composers such as Friedrich Holländer became famous overnight through 'The Blue Angel.' The famous hit 'Falling in Love Again' and the legs of the beautiful Marlene Dietrich enchanted Berlin and the whole world.
Listen to the great film and dance tunes of the 'Golden Twenties' on a musical walk from Broadway to Berlin with the beguiling sound of the Cologne New Philharmonic under my direction.

Since its world premiere in Vienna on December 30, 1877, the Second Symphony has become one of Brahms' most famous works, a bright and buoyant piece, full of sunshine and good cheer.
Volker Hartung conducts the fabulous and inspired St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. With his brilliant Cologne New Philharmonic, he moreover recorded a selection of Hungarian Dances in the perfect acoustics of Hamburg's Laeiszhalle.
Seit ihrer Uraufführung in Wien am 30. Dezember 1877 ist die Zweite Symphonie zu einem der berühmtesten Werke Brahms geworden, ein helles und beschwingtes Stück voller Sonnenschein und guter Laune.
Volker Hartung dirigiert das fabelhafte und inspirierte St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Mit seinem brillanten Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra nahm er zudem eine Auswahl ungarischer Tänze in der perfekten Akustik der Hamburger Laeiszhalle auf.

As the last of romantic symphonic composers Rachmaninoff represents a bridge between 19th century romanticism and modern times avangarde. His fabulous orchestrations generate lush sonorities and grandeur, and a style of overwhelming expression that fascinates the listener to this day. His 2nd piano concerto is a musical psychogram, as the young composer describes the healing of a profound mental depression.
This album contains three magnificent works by Russian composer Sergej Rachmaninoff.
Volker Hartung and fabulous pianist Stanislav SOLOVIEV gave a brilliant performance of Rachmaninoff’s 2nd piano concerto. They recorded in St. Petersburg with her great Philharmonic Orchestra. Back in Germany Hartung recorded the composer's own arrangement of „Vocalise for Orchestra“ with the Cologne New Philharmonic. He arranged Romance and Scherzo of the superb 1st string quartet for string orchestra, which the 17-year Rachmaninoff wrote as a student in 1890.
